Yes, its completely safe and incredibly beneficial to receive massage during the first trimester. You can receive a massage even after birth or within 24 hours of delivery. As long as there are no complications and mother is stable. While you may have heard the advice "to wait until the second trimester," that's a myth. not medically backed rule.
This outdated belief often stems from general caution during early pregnancy and a lack of understanding about how massage affects the body. However, there is no evidence that a properly trained prenatal massage therapist causes harm in health pregnancy. In fact, studies and continuing education in prenatal care show that gentle, intentional bodywork during the first trimester can support stress reduction, hormonal balance, nausea relief, and emotional well-being.
At Avo I am specifically trained in prenatal and doula work. I stay up to date and informed through up-to-date education, including coursework focused on debunking myths and supporting mothers throughout every stage of pregnancy. Including the very beginning.
If you are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy of have a specific medical concern. I will always check with your provider and tailor care accordingly. Your safety and comfort always come first.
This advice stems from caution, not evidence. Because miscarriages is most common in the first trimester, (usually due to genetic factors).
Some massage therapists historically avoided offering massage early in pregnancy. Not because it causes harm, but to avoid being wrongly associated with loss.
However, there is no medical research linking massage to miscarriage. In fact, many pregnant people are cleared to continue running, weightlifting, or intense physical activity during the first trimester. Activities that put far more strain on the body than a gentle supportive massage.
Massage therapy done by a trained prenatal provider can be deeply beneficial in early pregnancy. Easing nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and helping regulate the nervous system. At Avo, your care is grounded in both science and sensitivity and always tailored to meet you where you are. Emotionally, physically and spiritually.
If you have any concerns, or are navigating a high-risk pregnancy, I encourage open dialogue and collaboration with your medical provider, doula and/or midwife.
